Maybe make the default look way less intense with the filter, then when the player gets hit the intense filter activates for a brief second.
Bonus: you could make other filters like a Gameboy type unlockable after a first playthrough to encourage replays.

The filter is doing you no favours. Your billboard notice is completely unreadable.
