    I tried pressing the R2 button when I see the button icon and nothing's happening. Is this a bug, or am I just dumb?

    If you die in the first level without getting to a checkpoint you respawn at the top of the level and die repeatedly. You could possibly fix this by adding a checkpoint or if you move the emtrance doorway closer to the begining.
