    How about after you see the friend die you have to run through a maze to escape from mr recycle? As he is officially crazy now. I'm open to ideas :)

    Ok, pt3: the portal in pt2 is a gateway into Mr recycle friend's past. You see it from his view (but the player doesn't know this) as you progress you learn about about the player in pt1&2 At the end, you are killed revealing you were the friend all along
