Since you said about my game needing collectibles and make enemys more useful, my solution was "perks".
enemys have a chance to drop perks (1/25 chance), perks are buffs to the main character e.g: better damage. you can hold one perk at a time.

Couldn't reach the crossbow guy. Blocked by a platform. Decent start but some issues. Movement speed is too slow. Stairs are strange. I should be able to jump on to them and not fall through. It shows me an up arrow but needs angular push. Took me a while

Played Vania. Starts well, soon becomes unplayable. For me at least. Great job nonetheless.
