When using a tool like freeze or hide, everything looks different so it kinda "feels" like a mode or something. So my brain isn't sure which to use--circle or L1+circle. But I feel like they should just both work. If you're using L1+circle and you're not inside a group, just cancel the tool--just like you would with recording a keyframe.
