I know it's already been requested a few times, but with the new Convert-to-Painting tool I think it's a good time to reiterate why an eraser-like feature would be very much needed.
During the preview stream there was a lot of emphasis on how we can use the paintings as low cost background assets, but that's kind of misleading. Unlike sculpts, all paintings on screen will render even if they're obscured by other paintings. Because of how the new tool works, the entire surface area of the sculpt is made to paint, so any non-visible parts of the painting are wasted since it'll still affect performance and thermo. You'll see a lot of "noise" as more paint flecks on screen reduces LoD. Too many flecks on screen will cause paintings to flicker and can cause performance issues; too much will force VR users into cinema mode.
The only way to prevent the performance issues is to place a sculpt inside the painting so there's a physical object to obscure the paints, but then that sort of defeats the initial purpose of converting it for a background asset. An eraser would help immensely by allowing us to delete sections that we don't need anymore; and, of course, would be a very nice addition to make painting and drawing more fun.
