What is the best way to make things using up as little of the thermo as I can?

I have watched a few online clips and I am none the wiser as to the best way to go about it. Some of them talk about enlarging sculpts whilst others mention shrinking them down.

For example, say I wanted to make a wall or a roof to a building. What would be the cheapest way, in terms of using the thermo, to do that?
