Pretty sure that Dreams calculates the surface "texture" entirely based upon the light sources in the scene. So if you remove the ability for the light to hit the surface then how will dream know how to shade it?
Some kind of "fake" light mode?
Out of interest, have you tried tweaks to your light? So for example decreasing the intensity and increasing the falloff to smooth it out?
