I they're "petty" or "spiteful" sounds abusive to me. I would just report this stuff and see what happens.

Also you can block them, right? That's what I tend to do with troublemakers. Then their comments are hidden from me at least. Other people will know they're "bad eggs" and ignore them/down-vote them.
