I think a character builder would actually really benefit new users. There’s no reason the character couldn’t be generated as a proper puppet at the end. For example we can already tell a puppet to be sassy but then go and manually animate to override! So it’s not as if there is a single way to work with puppets.
A potentially character builder could let us select templated pieces. Perhaps with sliders to vary things? Or maybe just presets like the wii mii’s. When finished Dreams would generate the puppet and then it exists as a fully fledged puppet. To allow for edits a magic flag inside of the character would say it was generated. That way the user is prevented from making irreversible edits. If the user wishes to do so, they could do a one time operation that warns them that the operation can’t be undone.
The next best option is they added more curated custom puppets to the custom puppet menu. This would be a good compromise.
