Hi there,
I'm not sure that the physics can handle the stresses that you're putting on the joints.
Perhaps using regular bolts and rotators would help? Have you tried something like that? Or perhaps an advanced rotator?
Also bear in mind that you could us a keyframe at either extent of a joint's rotation and you would get smooth rotation between them.
It may take some fiddling about but I'm sure there's a way to get the result you want although the solution may not be entirely mechanically realistic.
