I think maybe you're wanting the SPRAY PAINT tool. So, in SCULPT mode choose tools and then towards the end you will see a spray can. This is the SPRAY PAINT tool, you can choose colours, opacity, and blend. Good tip though, if you have coated the object you will NOT be able to spray paint it. Just subtract/remove the coat and you should be fine. Hope that helps some. :)
