For now, I use the "chord" feature.
Go into performance mode, and turn on "Chords." Tick all the notes (1 - 8). Record and play the root note once, and stop recording. Go into piano roll mode. You now have all notes within that key. You can even duplicate to higher and lower octaves pretty easily.
For using this with an actual clip, I make all the notes short and put them off just before a bar. Then I drag the left "trim" to just after those notes. This means the loop or whatever won't play those notes, but start from just after them. Now you can use the notes as a reference, without worrying about them ever playing.
If you're working on a longer clip, you can do the same at the end of the clip, and trim the end too.
