I'm sure it'd also be useful just to get a game time value as well as millis. i.e. it doesn't matter what its based on, just that it gets bigger the longer you play. Its pretty normal to use something like that when building games to drive animations etc. Of course dreams gives you the signal generator but you loose a little flexibility that way.
