So with painting L1 is great for plane painting.

Turn on surface snap and grid snap. Before you focus in on the object take it and hit L1+Triangle to set the grid to the object or vice versa. This will help you when you start painting because it's all on the same grid now.

So now scope in L1+X and then start painting while holding L1 once your on the the same layer of grid you want to be in. I find myself constantly painting holding L1 it helps stay on grid.

One thing to note though surface snap applies to any surface so with more complicated paintings the paint starts snapping to previous paints instead of the surface. I found a work around but it's probably not what your looking for. So if you need help let me know!
