For something as simple as a sphere, the easiest way would be to just attach a microchip to it, and inside the microchip add a controller sensor. Now add three splitters and 4 advanced movers.

Connect the left stick output from the controller sensor to the input of a splitter, and then connect each of the outputs from that splitter to one of the inputs of the other two splitters (so that one splitter is recieving one output and the other gets the second output). The outputs from those last two splitters gives you the four directions on the stick as you can see if you hover over the output nodes where the wires are connected.

Now you just have to connect each of those 4 directions to a different advanced mover, and tweak the speeds on each mover to change how the sphere moves. Finally, make sure you tweak the sphere itself and turn on "moveable" in the physics tab, and turn on "ignore gravity" if you haven't set down a little space below your sphere to move around on top of.
