It's complex to describe all in detail here. Basically you want as many similar objects as possible. So for your roof example it's best to have one single object for your roof tiles (if you want safe thermo). It's more expensive to have different objects than copies.

So if you have a roof tile and copy it, but then decide to carve into one of them, your thermo will be affected and cost more. Because the one tile is now a different one.

If you resize objects, they become more loose, they will not cost more for their size. But if you stretch an object to the same size it will cost way more. But the object will be way cleaner.

You can always make stuff cheaper afterwards, so it's best to start with the actual size of the object and don't resize it later to make it bigger. It will look cheap.
