Double checked the cut out option at the time and it was off. I was also having some problems with the mirror, where I would still get the effects despite turning it off.
Things seem to have gone back to normal now, thankfully, so I'm thinking it may have been a temporary glitch.
The bits I cut out remain where they are when I try moving a sculpture while scoped in, however so it seems it may be an intentional function by Mm.
