Yeah, 3D stuff isn't so easy with a DS4, though it's all possible. Moves are a lot more intuitive, as you'd expect.
Smearing is basically adding a ton of the same shape at different positions. So it does tend to be pretty jaggy, yeah. If you smear with the curve tool, that's smooth. The others aren't.
I tend to use stamps and soft blend to get some nice shapes. And you can use the stretch tool to make a shape longer, etc.
