Hi, you're on the right lines. You can affect the paint strokes with a force applier but there's a couple of settings you need to get right. The force applier has a separate speed for paint strokes called "Force Speed On Strokes" make sure that's not zero. You then need to tweak your paint stroke and go to the 8th tab, with Newton's cradle on it. The first toggle button on there is "Physical" , turn it on, now your paint strokes will react to the force applier.
