Just tried it out and got it to work with a trigger zone, not gate and sun & sky gadget. Set the trigger zone in the room you want dark and hook it up to a not gate, then place a sun & sky gadget and hook the not gate into the sky brightness tab (on the second page of the sun & sky gadget). This way when you step into the trigger zone the sky brightness turns right down and everything goes dark but when you step back outside it goes bright again. If you want complete absolute darkness you can also hook the not gate into the sun colour tab to deactivate the sun and get complete pitch blackness everywhere while you are in the trigger zone.
