You don't need the chest for the arms to work.
You can press triangle on an object with connectors once. This will make connectors using that part glow, which means you can move connected objects around without messing with the purple joint position. You can also move one of the ends so that it hovers over a different object in the same scope, to make that new object the parent and the purple joint will move relative to the new parent instead.
So press triangle once on the chest. then move the yellows for the arm connectors down to the pelvis. Now delete the chest and... "belly"? And the arms should behave as normal but without the need for the chest at all.
