Maybe try take a look at the cuboid underneath the paint with the sculpture detail tool and see if it is consuming much thermo (red areas consume more) and can be reduced.

For paintings I guess it depends on how many strokes you use for the look you want to achieve. At times you may save on number of strokes used to achieve a certain look or effect simply by using a more appropriate fleck type & size, so that may be a good place to start and see if you can make savings there.

Also for a mossy effect you can reduce the amount of paint stokes needed if you add highlights (such as dark browns & greens) under the paint strokes using the sculpture spray paint tool. Hope this helps.
