Thanks for the reply, Giles. I guess a set of ball-jointed sculptures would work better than a puppet for something like this, considering the puppet's baked-in rules.

With enough fiddling, I should be able to seamlessly hotswap back and forth between a walking, controllable puppet and some imp-follow sculptures. I'll give it a try.
