hey thank you for the answer! this does help.
while I tend to have the grid on when sculpting, I often moved the object around after sculpting, so this must have set off the grid.

also I understood the set origin center option (L1+triangle) as more of a copy tool. I always pointed at the floor for example, set grid origin and then grabbed my target object to 'apply' with triangle. good to know it's more direct than that.
