To make combat feel like it has weight you will probably want to add reactions on the characters taking damage. like reaction animations, having characters get knocked back, and particle effects.

Its a bit like Newtons law 'For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction'

If its melee combat you may want to have different reaction animations for different directions of attacks e.g. if a swing from right to left hits an character you may want them to react to the left in the direction of the swing.
On top of animating these you will probably want to play with Trigger zones and Tags to detect the different the different directions.

Additionally try using emitters to emit debris and or paint particles effects. If you search the dreamiverse and filter for effects there are some example particles you can modify and emit. Emitters can go on the timeliens with the reaction animations

try putting a mover on the character pushing the backwards in local space when they are hit to make them get knocked back.
