I'm no expert, but from playing around trying to customize character animations, I think you need to pay attention to how objects are grouped, and how you sequence parts of the animation together.
Example:
Make a cube, start a new sculpt and make a slightly smaller cube.
Scope out, put the small cube just sticking out the top of the big cube.
Group the two objects.
Scope in and make a keyframe of the small cube raised up out of the big cube - then wire the keyframe to the square button on a controller gadget.
Scope all the way out, then animate the group of cubes to move side to side.
Now when you play the animation, you can press square to make the little cube move up and down, while the big cube is moving back and forth.
