One clean way of doing this is creating them using the Grid. Moreover, try to use the Grid if you want to move the clone aside to work on it, so when you move it back to its place it fits exactly where it was.
However, there is one way to align surfaces. With Precise Move guide ON (needs the Grid OFF), press Shift while moving an object along an axis. Now hover the Imp over another the surface of another object, and both, the point from which you grabbed the first object, and the point where you are hovering the imp, will align in that axis.
It's a bit obscure but play around and you'll find it very useful!
