I think a mover is more appropriate in this case. I don't think there should be a need to turn off gravity but I guess if you need to tweak it more. I'm interested how you'll handle the tractor beam and pendulum behaviour.
Good look with the game btw, it was one of my favourites back on the BBC micro. Yes, I'm that old.
