To build on what Magus said, Man, I went in to sculpt something the first day and was horrible. Not that I'm a genius now, but anyway, I almost gave up out of frustration. Then I started over with a simple shape. A square button, that I could keyframe. Alright, that worked pretty good. Then I made a mallet hammer. Really just one shape, two different sized cylinders but still. I've slowly built up to where I'm now doing a spaceship. Not from my head but one from a show. Looking back and forth from pic to sculpt and trying to add details and stuff. Really teaching me a lot there. I'd recommend starting simple with like an everyday item, say a microwave or stove or something or maybe even just a couch. Playing around with the different setting to get the look you want.

Oooh, oooh, something I JUST learned yesterday. I was struggling making a curve shape. Well there is the curve tool but I couldn't get it to work right. I'm smearing it all over and going this ain't making a smooth curve! Before you stamp it down, L1+square to go into shape editor and now you can stretch it and it has different points that you can push up or down or whatnot to make a bend. Freaking awesome!
