I think this is a limitation of the engine! Blend mode is pretty juicy, but it's not going to happen in-game between separate moving parts. Just look how much the framerate tends to skip when you're creating a live blend in sculpt. It would never fly realtime in a fully animated level with multiple parts.
So that's that - it's going to be a blocky overlap between body parts on a character. Now the trick is, how can you create an illusion to cover this up? Painting flecks, playing with looseness, creating overlapping shapes between moving parts... I'm experimenting with this too, but basically that's it. You've got to find clever ways to hide or disguise it.
