In you second level have you maybe got a variable modifier setting the variable anywhere in the scene that could be overriding the variable?
And to be sure, the variable that is identical across both scenes, they both have an initial value of zero right? Although I don't believe this should cause an issue.
Is your creation published? Or are you able to show some screengrabs of your logic involving the variables? As long as they're both in the same dream it should come across.
