Hi,
It depends how you activate the variable modifier gadget. Some gadgets and detectors, when they send a signal they also say which player was responsible for the signal. When you wire the X button from a controller sensor to the variable modifier's power it not only sends the fact that X has been pressed but also which player had control of the controller sensor. If the variable is set to "multiplayer" then player 1 pressing X will only update player 1's variable.
When you 'get' this variable you can pass it into a splitter and you will see there are different values for each player.

If you're not directly using a gadget that supports this you can construct your own player specific value using a combiner, set to "Player Info", and pass that to the variable modifier.

If you mark variables as "Persist in Dream" only the values that relate to your player will be saved in your profile. So each player can have different progess saved which will be maintained if they later play the Dream again on their own or with another player.
Hope that clears things up a bit
Matt
